          • UK’s new premier promises boost for nuclear power

            Boris Johnson expressed his "passionate" support for nuclear power when he addressed the House of Commons for the first time as UK prime minister yesterday. Seven of the country’s eight existing nuclear plants are set to be retired by 2030, while new-build projects have faced financial uncertainty over the last two years.

          • Energoatom tests Holtec used fuel casks at Rovno plant

            Ukraine's nuclear power plant operator Energoatom last week completed functional testing of Holtec International's HI-TRAC and HI-STAR 190 containers at unit 3 of the Rovno nuclear power plant during the VVER-1000 reactor's scheduled maintenance outage.

          • Regulators formalise technical collaboration on SMR regulation

            Canadian and US nuclear regulators have signed a first-of-a-kind Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) that will see them collaborate on the technical reviews of advanced reactor and small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. Meanwhile, the US Department of Energy has awarded funds to build SMR simulators at three US universities.

          • Russia completes MBIR hydraulic tests

            Atommash, part of the Volgodonsk branch of AEM Technology, has completed hydraulic tests of the reactor vessel of the MBIR multipurpose sodium-cooled fast neutron research reactor. MBIR is under construction at the site of the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors at Dmitrovgrad, which is in Russia's Ulyanovsk region.

          • WANO completes technical support mission at Leningrad II-2

            Experts from the Moscow Centre of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) have completed a technical support mission at unit 2 of the Leningrad Phase II nuclear power plant under construction in northwest Russia.

          • Sellafield launches repackaging of plutonium canisters

            Work has started on a five-year GBP1 billion (USD1.21 billion) programme to address an identified degradation risk in a small proportion of plutonium canisters stored at Sellafield in northwest England and dating from about 50 years ago. The start has been announced with the opening and repackaging of one such can for the first time.
